You are here. Was that part of the plan?
One of the first things we do in a new coaching partnership is drop a location pin.
Where are you now? Where are you heading? How does that feel?
The last few years have been particularly turbulent. Many of us have been buffeted and knocked off course by forces beyond our control. We’ve had to pivot and adapt (me too) and for a while that’s about holding on and keeping going. Making the best of things.
Then the time comes when you can lift your head up and look at the new horizon.
Are you where you want to be? Has your destination changed? Do you need to change course?
Time to get the maps out.
“You can’t use an old map to explore a new world”
We all have unique maps in our heads, based on our beliefs, culture and upbringing. Maps that reflect the lives we’ve lived so far. Maps shaped by the ideas about ourselves that come from our earliest years of life.
Unfortunately they’re seldom reliable.
If we follow them too closely we can end up living lives that are smaller, less successful and less happy than they could have been.
For example, your map might tell you that you shouldn’t be going towards senior leadership. Perhaps your parents or a teacher said something years ago that you took to heart. Or a bad tempered college professor said you weren’t leadership material. Or your first boss put you down in front of your colleagues.
It all goes on the map - and as always, it’s the negative we remember and that shapes how we see ourselves and our worlds.
The good news is that your map can be updated.
Coaching creates time and space to look for new destinations, new routes, new challenges. To explore the possibilities.
Working with me is a chance for you to be honest with yourself about what you want, and what you need now. Sometimes the mountain pass with the sheer drop on one side feels exhilarating. Sometimes it doesn’t.
It’s also an opportunity to dream and imagine. To plot and plan.
To get back on track.
