When my clients are making decisions about their futures, I ask them what currencies they want to be paid in.

Practical financial considerations are always important. So money, of course.

But what else?

We explore their key currencies, then check their balances - and often find they would benefit from updating or adjusting.

We start with a list of core personal values. They pick 10, then 5, then whittle down to one. Never easy.

What would yours be? Which would you mind losing most?

It could be opportunities for personal growth, such as help to gain qualifications or learn new skills, the chance to lead projects or work with a mentor. Or collaboration, being part of a community or team. Being respected and celebrated for your accomplishments. Integrity. Kindness. Security. Joy..

Then we explore whether the lived values of their workplace align with their personal values and the price they’re paying if not.

What about balance? Have they accidentally slipped into a pair of golden handcuffs that bring great financial rewards but at a high price to health and happiness?

What would be the difference between maximising and optimising their current workload?

Possibilities have changed too. The option to work from home, or anywhere remote, is increasingly available. Being part of an on-site team can be fantastic when you can take full advantage, but when young children, ill-health or elderly parents enter the equation, flexibility can be priceless.

What about swapping currencies? Are there options for a sabbatical or extended parental or unpaid leave? Can you step down as well as up without damaging your career?

Coaching creates space to consider all these questions; to take stock and check in with where you are and how you want to be paid now. It’s a chance to shift the spotlight beyond money, to focus on the other currencies you need.

An opportunity to rebalance your balances.
