The best way to invest in success
If you’re near the beginning of your leadership career then this the perfect time to invest and take ownership of your future.
You’ve been working a few years already, have probably seen good leaders and bad and you’re ready for a new challenge.
It’s tempting to take the first opportunity and go all-in.
But learning how to actively manage your career is a game-changer. It gives you agency, purpose and a clear sense of direction.
The result? A more successful career, on your own terms.
“Leadership is a choice, not a rank”
In our first session I always ask the same question: “What does success look like for you?”
Everybody’s answer is different; nobody’s first answer is the same as their final answer. We spend time here.
What kind of leader do you need to be to achieve that success?
The foundation is your values.
We audit your strengths and skills because this knowledge allows you to target your growth and development and to hire the people who can do what you can’t. No leader is good at everything - good leaders know what they’re good at, and what they’re not.
Then we talk about what Simon Sinek calls your Why - your purpose.
As your leadership identity takes shape, the trick is to keep it aligned with your definition of success.
Look around you - above, below, to the side - what can you learn from the people you work with? What are they doing that resonates with you? What jars? Keep watching, keep noting. Ask for feedback and advice. Keep it. Act on it. Look for patterns.
Is this realistic?
Probably not.
Unless you have a coach.
“The one thing people are never good at is seeing themselves as other people see them.
A coach really, really helps.”
We know that:
Great leaders are self-aware
Great leaders make you feel safe
Great leaders are always growing
Great leaders trust their gut
Great leaders work on their leadership every day.
We’re living through a time of heightened uncertainty and rapid, often frightening change.
AI is with us but, its own words, it “lacks the human qualities that are essential for effective leadership, such as adaptability, emotional intelligence and the ability to build trust and foster collaboration.”
So it’s down to us.
But it’s not easy.
